Explaining a treatment plan in a second language is harder than it looks, and the questions people most want to ask are the ones they are least able to phrase. Between our team, Hindi, Punjabi and Nepali are spoken alongside English, and Dr Pa Sia, who works at Kirwan and Bohle Plains, speaks Hmong.

Dental consent is a conversation, not a signature. You are meant to understand what is being proposed, what the alternatives are and what happens if you do nothing, and that is a genuinely hard conversation to have in a language you are still working in.

You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to help, and many people do. One thing to be aware of: consent for treatment is yours to give, so we will still take the time to check that you have understood what is proposed rather than relying on somebody else to pass it on. That is not a formality, it is the point of the conversation.
