A regular check-up and clean is the single most valuable appointment you have, because almost every expensive dental problem started as a small, painless one that a check-up would have caught. It’s the everyday care that keeps your teeth comfortable and healthy for life — and it’s the foundation everything else is built on.
Whether you’re a family in the Bohle Plains and Kirwan growth corridor, a cane farmer coming in from the Herbert River district around Ingham, or a fly-in-fly-out worker passing through Emerald, My Family Dental keeps preventive care simple, local and honest.
What Happens at Your Check-up
Your dentist examines each tooth for decay and cracks, checks your gums for early signs of disease, looks at your bite and any wear from grinding, and screens the soft tissues of your mouth. Where it helps, we take x-rays to see between the teeth and below the gumline — the areas the eye can’t reach.
We also take a moment to understand the bigger picture: your general health, your diet, and habits like smoking or alcohol that affect your mouth. If we spot anything, we show you on the screen and explain what it means before we ever talk about treatment. There’s no jargon and no pressure.
The Professional Clean
Even with good brushing and flossing, calcium and plaque harden into tartar over time — and a toothbrush simply can’t remove it. Left alone, that build-up feeds the bacteria behind gum disease and bad breath.
Our clean uses ultrasonic instruments to loosen the larger deposits, a hand scaler to clear the smaller ones between the gums and teeth, then polishing to smooth the surface and lift everyday stain from tea, coffee and red wine. We usually finish with a fluoride application to help strengthen the enamel. Most people leave with that fresh, smooth-teeth feeling and a clear plan for what’s next.
How Often Should You Come In?
Six months suits most people, but it genuinely depends on you. Guidelines allow anything from three-monthly to two-yearly. If your mouth is healthy and stable we may space your visits out; if you’re prone to decay, grind your teeth, or are managing gum disease, we may suggest coming in more often for a while. We’ll give you an interval based on your actual risk, not a rigid rule — and a reminder when you’re due.
Cost, Health Funds & Kids
A check-up and clean starts from $75, with the final fee depending on the x-rays and cleaning needed on the day. If treatment is required, you’ll always get a clear, written quote first — no surprises at the desk. If you have extras cover we process your claim on the spot through HICAPS, so you only pay the gap.
For children, eligible kids aged 2–17 can access the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which covers up to around $1,000 of dental care over two calendar years — and we bulk bill it, so their check-ups, cleans, x-rays and fillings can be at no out-of-pocket cost within the cap. We’ll confirm eligibility at the front desk.
Important: Fees noted here are indicative starting points only and vary between individuals. Your written quote is provided after an examination. Any dental treatment carries risks, and outcomes differ from person to person — seek advice appropriate to your circumstances from a qualified health practitioner.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
A check-up is a full look at your oral health, not just a quick glance at your teeth. We examine your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, and we take the chance to ask about your general health, diet, and habits like smoking, alcohol and how you clean your teeth at home. Where it’s useful we take x-rays to see between teeth and below the gumline. The check-up is usually paired with a clean, where we remove the hardened tartar a toothbrush can’t shift.
It isn’t one-size-fits-all. Guidelines allow anything from every three months to every two years depending on your risk, but most people are encouraged to come in around every six months. If your teeth and gums are healthy and stable we may stretch your interval; if you’re prone to decay or gum problems we may suggest coming in more often for a while. We’ll recommend an honest interval based on your mouth.
For most people a scale and clean is straightforward and well tolerated — some feel a little sensitivity around the gumline, especially if it’s been a while between visits. Tell your dentist or hygienist if anything feels tender and they’ll adjust. Coming in regularly actually keeps cleans lighter, because there’s less hardened tartar to remove each time.
A check-up and clean at My Family Dental starts from $75, though the exact fee depends on what’s needed on the day — for example, the number of x-rays or the amount of cleaning required. In Queensland a check-up commonly ranges from around $150 to $350 once x-rays and a clean are included. If we find something that needs treatment we’ll give you a written quote first. If you have extras cover, we claim through HICAPS on the spot so you only pay the gap.
We’ll show you what we’ve found — on an x-ray or an intraoral photo — and explain it in plain language, then give you options and a written quote. Nothing is done in the same visit without your say-so. If a small early problem can safely be watched and managed rather than treated straight away, we’ll tell you that too.
