Dental Crowns & Bridges — Restore and Replace

Custom crowns to protect a damaged tooth, and bridges to fill a gap — colour-matched and fitted over two visits at your local North Queensland clinic.

Crowns and bridges are custom, fixed restorations. A crown fully covers an existing tooth like a protective cap, while a bridge replaces missing teeth by anchoring to the natural teeth beside the gap. Both are typically two-appointment procedures — preparation and a temporary restoration first, then the permanent piece cemented into place — and both are made to match your natural teeth.

When a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling, or you have a gap where a tooth used to be, crowns and bridges are the workhorses of restorative dentistry. A crown wraps and protects a weakened tooth so it can keep working; a bridge fills a gap so your remaining teeth don’t drift and your bite stays even.

They’re common across every stage of adult life — from a cracked molar in a busy Townsville tradesperson to replacing a long-missing tooth for a retiree in Bowen or Emerald. Wherever you are in North Queensland, the aim is the same: a strong, natural-looking result.

Crowns: Protecting a Tooth

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It’s the go-to when a tooth is heavily filled, cracked, worn or weakened — and it’s often placed after root canal treatment to protect the tooth and let it keep doing its job for years.

Crowns come in several materials, each with its own balance of strength and appearance: gold, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), all-ceramic options like Zirconia and Alumina, and Emax. Tooth-coloured ceramics are popular where the crown shows, while stronger materials can suit back teeth. We’ll match the material to the tooth and to what matters most to you.

Bridges: Filling a Gap

A bridge permanently replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Leaving a gap unfilled can allow neighbouring teeth to tilt and the opposing tooth to over-erupt, which changes your bite over time — so bridging can be about function as much as appearance.

Like a crown, a bridge follows a two-visit process: the supporting teeth are prepared and impressions taken, a temporary is fitted, and the finished bridge is cemented in at the second appointment.

The Two-Visit Process, Longevity & Cost

At your first visit, the tooth (or teeth) are prepared, an impression is taken, and a temporary restoration is fitted so you’re comfortable while your custom piece is made. At the second visit, we check the fit and colour, make any adjustments, and cement it permanently.

With good care, crowns commonly last around 10 to 20 years and bridges up to 15 years or more — longevity that depends on your hygiene, bite and habits like grinding. Because cost varies with the number of teeth and the materials used, we provide a personalised written quote after assessing the tooth. Eligible health-fund rebates are claimed through HICAPS, and payment plans are available.

Important: Any dental treatment carries risks, and the lifespan of a restoration varies between individuals. Materials, suitability and fees are confirmed after an examination and provided in a written quote. Seek advice appropriate to your circumstances from a qualified health practitioner.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A crown is a custom cap that fully covers a single existing tooth to protect and restore it — useful when a tooth is heavily filled, cracked or weakened, often after root canal treatment. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Both are fixed restorations, made to match your natural teeth.

Crowns come in several materials, each with trade-offs in strength and appearance: gold, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), all-ceramic options such as Zirconia or Alumina, and Emax. Tooth-coloured ceramics are popular for front teeth because they blend in, while stronger materials may suit back teeth that take heavy chewing forces. We’ll recommend the material that fits the tooth and your priorities.

A crown or bridge is typically a two-appointment procedure. At the first visit we prepare the tooth, take an impression and fit a temporary restoration. Your custom crown or bridge is then made, and at the second visit it’s checked, adjusted and permanently cemented into place.

With good care, crowns commonly last around 10 to 20 years, and bridges up to 15 years or more. Longevity depends on your oral hygiene, your bite, habits like grinding, and keeping up regular check-ups so we can spot any issues early. Looking after the gum and the teeth supporting a bridge is especially important.

There’s no single price — the cost of a bridge in particular varies with the number of teeth being replaced and the materials used, and crowns vary by material too. Rather than quote a misleading figure, we assess the tooth and give you a personalised written quote. Any eligible health-fund rebate is claimed through HICAPS, and payment plans are available.
