The journey to specialist
Dr Sudeep Singh's dental career began in Mangalore, on India's south-west coast, where he completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the A.J. Institute of Dental Science. After graduating, he made the move to Australia, not to Sydney or Melbourne, but to regional Queensland, where the need for dental care was real and growing.
He started practising in Ingham, a small cane-farming town in North Queensland's Herbert River district. It was the kind of place where dentists were scarce and patients drove long distances for treatment. Working in that environment shaped the way he practises: thorough, practical, and focused on what the person in front of him actually needs.
While building his career in the regions, Dr Singh continued his education in Australia. In 2018 he completed a Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology through James Cook University in Cairns, and later earned a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontics from Griffith University: the highest clinical training pathway for gum and implant care in Australia.
That combination of credentials makes him one of the few registered specialist periodontists working in North Queensland. Today he practises at My Family Dental's Kirwan and Bohle Plains clinics, and also founded and runs Ayr Family Dental: his own practice in the Burdekin region. Across those locations he serves patients from Townsville, Bohle Plains, Ingham, Innisfail, Bowen and Emerald.
Over 16 years in, Dr Singh's work still centres on the same thing it did when he started: keeping teeth and gums healthy for people who don't always have a specialist down the road.
What a specialist periodontist does
A periodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional three years of full-time university training specifically in the structures that support teeth: the gums, the bone, and the ligaments that hold everything in place.
Where a general dentist handles a wide range of dental work, a periodontist focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, the surgical placement of dental implants, bone grafting, gum grafting, and regenerative procedures that help save teeth that might otherwise be lost. They also manage complex cases that involve multiple implants or significant bone loss: situations where the margin for error is smaller and specialist training makes a measurable difference.

A periodontist is a dental specialist who has completed additional years of registered specialist training focused on the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, and on dental implants. General dentists treat gum disease routinely; a periodontist handles the more advanced or complex cases, and surgical procedures such as bone grafting.
No referral is required. Many patients are referred by their own dentist, including dentists outside our practice, but you are welcome to book directly if you are concerned about your gums, have been told you have periodontal disease, or are considering implants.
He sees patients at the Kirwan clinic on Thuringowa Drive and at Bohle Plains in the Kalynda Chase estate, both in Townsville. Patients travelling from Ingham, Innisfail, Bowen or Emerald are often able to have several stages of treatment grouped to reduce the number of trips.
