Dentures vs Implants: What You Need to Know
A plain-language comparison of dentures and dental implants for replacing missing teeth — how each works, their day-to-day pros and cons, and how to choose the right option for you in North Queensland.
Losing one or more teeth is common, and the good news is that there are well-established ways to replace them. For many patients across our North Queensland clinics — from retirees around Bowen to sugar-cane and farming families in the Hinchinbrook and Cassowary Coast districts — the choice comes down to two options: dentures or implants. Both restore your smile and your ability to eat comfortably, but they work quite differently. Here is what to know before you decide.
What are dentures?
Dentures are the traditional solution to missing teeth. They consist of artificial teeth set into a plate that rests on the gums, and they can be removed for cleaning.
- Full dentures replace all the teeth in an arch.
- Partial dentures fill the gaps around your remaining natural teeth. They clip in and are supported by those teeth, which also helps stop the remaining teeth drifting out of position over time.
Because they lift out, dentures are simple to clean and let the gums rest — a practical advantage many people value.
What are implants?
An implant is a small post placed surgically into the jawbone, with an artificial tooth attached on top. Over the following months the bone heals and fuses around the post, holding it firmly in place so the replacement tooth functions much like a natural one.
Implants can replace a single tooth, or — using an approach known as All-on-4 — four carefully positioned posts can support a full arch of fixed replacement teeth. The defining feature is permanence: implants stay put and are cared for like your own teeth rather than being removed at night.
The honest answer: it comes down to you
There is no universal “better” option here — dentures versus implants is largely a matter of your circumstances and preference. Both do the same two core jobs: they restore the appearance of your smile, and they let you bite and chew properly again.
A few points worth weighing up:
- Dentures can be removed, which makes cleaning easy and gives the gums a break. They are typically a lower up-front commitment.
- Implants are fixed and stable, and tend to feel closest to natural teeth day to day. Placement is a surgical procedure, so it takes longer overall and requires healthy gums and adequate jawbone.
- Both can restore confidence and make eating a wider range of foods more comfortable — a real benefit if you enjoy the fresh local produce the region is known for, from Bowen mangoes to Ingham’s cane-country cooking.
Things to consider before choosing
Because implants involve surgery, suitability depends on factors such as gum health, the amount of jawbone present and your general health, and the treatment carries the usual surgical risks. Dentures suit almost everyone but need occasional adjustment as the mouth changes over time. An individual assessment is the only reliable way to know which path fits your mouth and your lifestyle.
What about cost?
Costs vary depending on the option you choose, the materials involved and your individual needs, so we do not publish fixed prices. Dentures and implants sit at different price points and involve different ongoing care. At a consultation we can explain the factors that affect the cost for your situation and give you a written quote. Eligible treatment can have private health rebates processed on the spot via HICAPS, and payment plan options are available on request.
